On Monday 6th March a group of Methodists from Shildon and Bishop Auckland went to Traidcraft headquarters at Gateshead to celebrate Fair Trade fortnight and meet Linda Berchie, a cocoa farmer.
Linda comes from the Western Region of Ghana where she lives with her husband and four children. She is responsible for weighing all the cocoa grown by her village and paying the farmers accordingly.
She has a 12 acre cocoa farm and is an active member of the Kuapa Gender team, organising training for women farmers on money and home management, and alternative income generating methods like soap making and growing other crops.
Earlier in the month Shildon Methodist Church had supported the work of Traidcraft by holding a ‘Big Brew’, which raised £30 and gave the opportunity for people to purchase a wide variety of Fairtrade products.
If you are interested in knowing more – pop into the Church coffee morning, held each Thursday from 10-11am.
