“Life doesn’t end when dementia begins”

The Wellbeing for Life Health Trainer service in Shildon has been taking part in a monthly social gathering for people living with dementia, and for their carers.

Shildon Alive run the sessions from Chestnut Close Communal Lounge on Jubilee Estate between 1pm and 2.30pm on the first Tuesday of every month.

The drop-in is for anyone affected by dementia, and all activities aim to keep people with dementia connected to their lives and the people who matter most.

Hot drinks and biscuits are provided and activities include fun quizzes and a ‘trip down memory lane’ looking at memorabilia photos, old war books and other nostalgic items.

The group recently had a sing song to celebrate Forces entertainer Dame Vera Lynn’s 100th birthday.

Students from Bishop Auckland College have also attended to give hand massages and do the ladies’ nails.

Housing provider livin have supported the sessions by providing the venue for free, and getting essential works done in the garden so that it is a safe environment for people to enjoy in the upcoming months.

A free Shildon Health Express bus, driven by a familiar face from the group, is provided in order to transport people to and from their homes.

A spokesperson for the service said, “We believe passionately that life doesn’t end when dementia begins.”
