Monday Club celebrates 24th birthday

Based at the Lilburn Community Lounge in Lilburn Close, the Monday Club was formed in 1993 by Shildon Centre volunteers, the late Mrs Doreen Squince, who passed away in 2016, and Mrs Frances Franklyn.

The group, which aims to provide a social afternoon for elderly ladies, gathered this week to celebrate its 24th birthday.

The ladies were delighted to be joined by surprise visitor, the mayor of Shildon, Cllr Shirley Quinn, who popped in to wish the group a happy birthday.

The group, which currently has 15 members, is regularly entertained by singer, Jean Bird (pictured above third from right).

The club originally began at the Shildon Centre and remained there for its first three years before moving to its present location 21 years ago.

Lunch for the birthday celebrations was provided by the Methodist Church.

Members of the group are picked up by the Shildon Community Bus from 1pm and returned home by the same transport at 3.30pm each Monday.

The club is keen to attract volunteer drivers who could help transport members to the club each Monday, starting at Shildon BR.

The Community Bus is also in need of additional volunteer drivers for the service’s other activities.

Anyone interested in helping can get in touch by contacting the community bus office on 01388 773666.
