Shildon Alive! launch a ‘Fridge For All’

Shildon Alive! (a Saint John’s Church community project) launched their first community fridge this week, in partnership with Strategic Waste Management, Durham County Council.

Reverend Canon David Tomlinson officially opened the service and thanked Sainsbury’s for funding the fridge and the Council’s Waste Team for helping support Shildon Alive be part of the growing national community fridge network.

Shildon Alive are working with Durham County Council, Sainsbury’s ‘Waste less save more’ and HUBBUB to reduce food waste in the area by collecting food waste from their local Tesco and Morrisons to weigh and put in the ‘Fridge for all’.

The fridge is for everyone in the community to take from or donate to.

The average household throws away £470 food every year and at the same time four million people in the UK are living in food poverty, this is when 4.1 million tonnes of food waste could be avoided.

Please get involved by donating your unwanted edible food as well as using the fridge and let us see how much food waste we can save and share with our community.
