Accident Unit Under Threat

Once again the Accident and Emergency Department at Bishop Auckland Hospital is under threat of closure. County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust sugests that the A & E be replaced by a minor injuries unit and major accidents be dealt with by Darlington Memorial Hospital. A public meeting will be held in Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Wednesday 17th September to alow residents to air their views

Post Office Closure

Despite protests by residents and Shildon Town Council, the sub post office on Jubilee Estate will close towards the end of June.

Shildon By-Election

A by-election is to be held in the Byerley Ward of Shildon Town. The vacancy on Shildon Town Council was created by the sudden death earlier this month of Cllr John Smith, leader of the council.
The by-election will be held on Thursday the 3rd July.

Shildon Parish Meeting

Local Councillor Dies

The sudden death of the leader of Shildon Town Council, Cllr John Mayfors Smith, has been announced.
John Smith was the proprietor and founder of the local free newspaper, The Shildon Town Crier, which has just celebrated ten years of publishing. He also helped to set up South West Durham Credit Union, Bishop FM, The Spenny News and The Ferryhill Chapter. John was a former Sedgefield Borough Councillor and was instrumental in bringing about the sucess of the Independents in the Town and Borough Councils Elections in 2003 and 2007.

Civic Hall Upgrade

Shildon Town Councilors hace voted in favour of a phased upgrade of the Civic Hall. Out will go the old concrete bunker look of the outside, out will go the old toilets, out will go the old dressing rooms and out will go the old furniture and appearance of the bar and restarant. New rendering and a slate roof will improve the look of the building whilst inside almost everything will be refurbished. Shildon Civic Hall continues to be a popular venue for meals and local events but has suffered from lack of investement in recent years. The Independent controlled Council are commited to improving facillites for residents and have recently completed work on the Civic Offices, the tennis courts and West Rd cemetary

Crier 10 Not Out

Shildon and District Town Crier has now been published for ten years.Every Friday since 27th March 1998 the Crier has landed on the door-step of every house and business in Shildon and the surrounding area.
John Smith, who started the newspaper said " Its quite a milestone for a free local paper"
